Background
My name is Vikram Swamy. I started playing tennis at age 9 in Mumbai, India and competed in local high-level junior tournaments. I came to the US at age 18 for college and walked onto my NCAA Division 1 tennis team at Lafayette College, PA, playing #2 singles and #1 doubles from 1990-94.
Some of my most memorable moments as a young tennis player are:
- Hitting with Leander Paes, former ATP #1 doubles player, at my home club's U-12 tournament.
- Meeting Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander, former ATP #1 players, when they played against India in the Davis Cup in 1985.
- Being a hitting partner to Nandini Rangarajan, former India #1 women's player who was granted entry to the Wimbledon qualifiers.
I grew up playing, watching and loving the sport. Some of my favorite players to watch were Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and now Carlos Alcaraz.
After a hiatus as an adult, I have gotten back into playing and competing regularly at a high-level (NTRP 4.5) these past 3 years and would love to share my knowledge of the game and passion for it with others through coaching.
My coaching philosophy
I pride myself in being a good listener and communicator. I try to understand the players I coach, their motivations and focus on continuous improvement. Above all, I believe fostering a love for the sport is the most important job of a coach. The results will follow if the player enjoys their time spent on court and the feel and sound of a tennis ball well struck. Tennis is truly a sport for life.
I believe in teaching not only the fundamentals and techniques (the how) but also explaining the theory behind those techniques (the why). I try to make the player think about what they are doing on court with the goal of increasing their tennis IQ and solving their own problems.
I enjoy working with beginners through advanced players to help each person through their individual tennis journey.
